Anti-Oppressive Practice
Aim
To enable participants to understand, identify and implement anti-oppressive youth work practice.
Learning Objectives
- To increase awareness of prejudice, discrimination and oppression
- To identify behaviours and practices that, are oppressive in youth work.
- To identify methods to improve anti-oppressive practice.
Introduction
This session continues along the theme of relationships. It has been developed because we believe that the development of skills and knowledge on equal opportunities and anti-oppressive practice are fundamental to becoming and effective youth worker and developing relationships with young people. We will consider social divisions and how these have influenced your own life and factors that need to be taken into account in your professional practice.
This training session encourages workers into thinking about your working practice, activities and services and who can access them. Sometimes in order for inclusion to happen we have to alter our approach, activities and attitude. At times you may find this session to be challenging. This is because we may begin to recognise ways in which we either are or have been oppressive towards others. We need to make sure that we listen carefully to each other as we explore different ways of seeing the world and as we examine our own ways of dealing with situations. It is all about keeping an open mind and encouraging others to think about how their words and actions can affect others.
