Equal Opportunities & Diversity

Aim

To enable participants to develop a youth work setting that recognises difference and embraces diversity.

Learning Objectives

  • Increase awareness of what stereotypes, prejudice, discrimination and equal opportunities are.
  • Identify key legislation affecting equality and diversity.
  • Identify methods to remove barriers and increase inclusion.

Introduction

Equal Opportunities, what is it and why is it important in youth work?

We are all stereotyped because of some of our personal characteristics and all hold prejudices. This session helps us to explore these prejudices’ and how we can overcome them before stereotypes become discriminatory. It helps us to think about what is unacceptable behaviour in our youth work settings and what we can do to alter the atmosphere, to make it conducive for all young people and volunteers to feel welcome and able to participate.

The course can suit anyone; from opening young people’s minds, to serving as a useful reminder for seasoned staff or volunteers. It is an interactive, fun session, which breaks down jargon and enables all workers to think through their personal prejudices and how to challenge discriminatory behaviour in their club.
